CORRECTIONS
Committee Description
An Invitation to the Greater Williamsburg
AA Community from the Corrections Committee
At this moment, there is an incarcerated person who cannot get to AA meetings. They may be aware of the Alcoholics Anonymous program and are looking for more information and support from someone in the AA fellowship. Here is how you can help.
1. Corrections Correspondence
Corrections volunteers write letters to people who are incarcerated by submitting an application to the AA Central Office (GSO). GSO will send you the address of an incarcerated person who has also submitted an application to the GSO. AA’s share their experience, strength and hope via writing letters. You can get started by completing the CCS-3 Correspondence Form provided by the General Service Office.
The form can be requested here: https://www.aa.org/pages/en_US/corrections-correspondence-service
Send the form to:
Corrections Desk – General Service Office
Box 459 Grand Central Station
New York, NY 10163
You will receive the name and address of an inmate along with guidelines for the content of your letters. You may wish to use this dedicated Corrections mail box as your return address:
Your name and home group name
Williamsburg AA
Box 617
Williamsburg, VA 23187
Corrections Committee members check the PO Box at least twice each week.Having your home group name will help us get your response letters to you in a timely fashion.
2. AA Meetings in Corrections Facilities
Sometimes people who are incarcerated have an opportunity to participate in AA meetings supported by corrections volunteers. These meetings are an opportunity for an introduction to AA, including some of the basic tools suggested for recovery. They are also a way to identify with other alcoholics. Applications, training and a background check are required to attend these meetings.
The minimum requirements for volunteers are:
-
Have at least one year of sobriety.
-
Are not using other recreational drugs.
-
No active involvement with the justice system.
-
Such as probation and parole or a pending court case.
-
-
Do not have a family member in the facility to be visited.
Williamsburg supports Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail and Henrico County Regional Jail-East.
Participating in corrections service and/or serving on the corrections committee can help people who are incarcerated link with Alcoholics Anonymous. This is also a way of supporting our own sobriety through meaningful service.
Please email corrections@aawilliamsburg.org to volunteer or for further information including applications.
